THE GIANTESS

(Charles Baudelaire)

In the days, when Nature in her powerful eloquence
each day conceived some monstrous children
I should have loved to live close by a young giantess
like a voluptuous cat at the feet of a queen.

I should have loved to witness her soul enspiriting her growing frame,
to see her practicing wantonly her frightful games, to surmise
whether her heart concealed a dark flame
behind the damp mists swimming in her eyes.

I should have loved to survey, whenever I should please,
her magnificent form and to crawl up the slope of her enormous knees,
and sometimes in summer, when wearisome suns

had made her lay down across the countryside to rest,
I should have loved to sleep unworried in the shade of her breasts
like a tranquil hamlet nestled at the foot of a mountain.
