Decline of a Statesman: VI. DIALOG

      An unchanging mind's a stone
      Defined by what it damages;
      Spray of speech, then silence
      Gives night a damask tone.
5     Angry with the sea I claimed
      An everlasting fire:
      While fragrant eyelid closed a night
      On bodily desire.
      When she stepped seaward, stone to stone,
10    In violet degrees
      Did a paper eyelid burn?
      Or changeless oceans slide?
