Anti-War Poets and the White House

There's a great old article in The Weekly Standard about a poetry event that was to be held at the White House, but that was cancelled because Sam Hamill was going to turn the cultural event into an anti-war protest. He was going to hand Laura Bush 3600 anti-war poems he had solicited via email. He complained he was "nauseous" when he received the invitation. The whole thing was last Febuary, and I can't believe that I missed this news! Anyway, this article talks about our national poetry culture: who owns it and what its about--and about the poet's responsibility in wartime. It is very soft on everyone, but is the ONLY article of its kind I've ever seen or even heard of.

I have taken a much more militant stance, and you can see the result of that in my essay: Poets At War. Today, I've printed out handbills for the Dodge Poetry Festival with the statement on one side and a compaion poem on the other-- in shocking pink, or course!

From the article:
"In our poets against the war, you can perceive Vietnam envy, gleeful adolescent ill-manners, and straightforward political partisanship. But none of that entirely explains the desperation to make themselves matter as poets--even if the cost is writing what they must know doesn't matter as poetry, even if most of the verses collected by Swift and Hamill are attempts to prevent the emergence of a world in which poetry matters. How could they allow a middlebrow Republican like Mrs. Bush to host a poetry event? Their deepest self-understanding requires that such things not be."

The Brain Cell

The "Brain Cell," a new kids' poem is now available online at: http://www.gregglory.com/braincell/ The text is by gregglory and Carrie Water. Illustrations and Flash by gregglory. This riddling poem was inspired by writer's ennui and the Middle English tradition of riddle-poems. A contemporary modern example is the dialog between Frodo and Golum in The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. More generally, and puzzling or rhetorical, twisty question or riddle can legitimately be considered as belonging to this genre. The big question of this poem is: "When you are trapped in a brain cell, can you escape?" The point is the pun, and the fun of a Zen koan ladled into a children's verse that grown-ups can groan at and kids ask their folks a lot of sticky questions.

Waxy Caskets

Working on a new Poesy CD to be entitled "Waxy Caskets." The poems on this album will be from this year's crop of poesy-- everything from "The Soft Assault" to "The Timid Leaper." Check out those pages for more of the books, along with various downloads and mp3s of some of the poems. With any luck, some of the sounds on the CD will have been manipulated by the DeadCMonkeys and Formica Jones. Information about these artists can be found at http://www.corporategreed.com
